Wed, 08/04/2010 - 12:00
The megalithic observatory Kokino is found in the northern part of Macedonia, near the border with the Republic of Serbia. It is in the region of the village Kokino, and on the border with the village Arbanashko. The whole region is sparsely inhabited, so in the ten surrounding villages, there live less than 1000 people.
According to the dimensions and the appearance, the locality differs from any other archeological location seen before. It expands on an area of 5000m2, placed scale-like on two platforms near the mountain peak Tatikhev Kamen at the altitude of 1013m.
At first sight, the stone seats named Thrones seem to dominate, and they are carved in the rocks and they are set in the direction of north-south. This way, a person who sits on one of the Thrones is turned towards the Eastern horizon, which gave the archeologists the idea that probably the eavenly bodies were observed in that way.
In the greater region, numerous archeological localities have been registered, dating from the Neolitical to the medieval period. That concludes that the whole region has a history with lifespan of at least 6000 years, abundant with meaningful settlements, shrines, happenings and individuals.
