Old ancient settlement near Shtip
The old antique settlement with city character named Bargala was located near Dolni Kozjak, Stip. This city was ruined at the end of the 4th century, but the place wasn’t abandoned. The archeological findings show that the inhabitants risen a new town at Gorni Kozjak, who became an Episcopal seat in the 5th and the 6th century. The Episcopal city of Bergala was destroyed by the Avaro – Slavic attacks, but soon after inhabited again. The religious tradition of the old Episcopal seat continued at the Slavic period in this area.
In the village Gorni Kozjak, north of the river Kozjak is situated an early middle age city – fortress, who is almost 5 hectares large. The city represents a fortress surrounded with walls and towers, with monumental entries and gates. The fortress of the city with the walls larger than two meters, form an extended rectangular space.
