West from the fisherman settlement Kaneo in Ohrid, on the plateau that is rising above the lake is located the church dedicated to St. John the Theologian.

There is no written information about the history of the church. Today it is not confirmed if this church was built in a sacred place. Although there are no certain historic facts about the church, it life can be followed from the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. In one period the monastery life was interrupted and the church was desolated (from the 17th till the 19th century). At the 19th century were constructed the four lateral arches and raised up the outbuildings at the north, west and south side, which today are eliminated.

The old church has an architectonical conception in a cruciform shape with rectangle basis, a unique three-sided apse on the east side and an octagonal dome which is supported on four pillars with the assistance of pendants. The church was built of an unhewn stone in the lower part, and with variable horizontal and vertical parts of hewed tuff and brick in the upper part. It is also noticed a tendency for ceramoplastic decoration of the facades, especially on the apse, the south facade and the dome. For this is distinctive the decoration of the upper part of the dome, on which are putted angle pediments from all eight sides. This church has an influence from the Armenian architecture, unlike the other churches in Macedonia.

Today in Kaneo are preserved a big part of the primal frescoes and although are performed some modifications in that regard, the church has kept its primal charm. We are grateful to its resistance through the centuries, although it was abandoned for a long time.
