The second town in the Polog valley is Gostivar with population of 41000 people and at altitude of 510-550m.
The town rests on the shores of the River Vardar. Little is known about the age of the town and for its ancestors. It is possible that in its place in Roman time, existed the town of Draudak; however, its location has not been discovered yet. The Slavs gave the name Pod-log to this place, which means “under the forest” or “under the mountain”.
In the close proximity of the town, close to the village of Vrutok, the springs of the River Vardar are found and they represent the biggest karst spring in the Republic of Macedonia.
