A cradle of rich endemic flora and fauna

Galichica was proclaimed as National Park by the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia in October 1958, because of its specific location, extremely opulent and endemic flora and fauna and the great landscape and aesthetic values.

THE FORESTS IN GALICHICA:
The distinctive flora and fauna at the forests and the forest area of Galichica, was the main reason for the proclamation as a National Park. Their important value is confirmed with the abundance of the naturally present plant species and forest communities that are formed by them. The rich biological variety of the forests is rareness of the whole Balkan Peninsula and in Europe.

The autochthonous flora of plant species is represented with 176 species, which represents 58% of the dendroflora of Macedonia, from which 26 are Balkan endemic types that live in this area. On the massif are also present rare plant species that can be met only in Galichica and also at one or two mountains in Macedonia. From them it can be distinguished the dwarf cherry (Prunus Prostrata), the rayed broom (Genista radiata), wulfenia and common dandelion, the smooth nettle and the horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum).

One of the autochthonous plant species is a remaining of the old tertiary dendroflora , which additionally increases the floristic value of Galichica. These relict species had found a shelter from the attack of the ices at several specific localities, which today are centre of biological variety. Such kind of locality is Zli Dol with 65 and the hill Golem Osoj with 56 plant species.

The floristic treasure of Galichica attracts like magnet a big number of botanists, dendrologists and phytocenologists. Thanks to their researches, today we have a detailed description of the forest communities and their specie composition, at the floor of the trees and at the floor of the bushes.

The new international experiences and standards in the protection and ruling with the protected areas are directing to the change of the goals of the ruling with the forests – from maintained usage to protection of the biological variety. Following these trends, the National Park Galichica initiates activities for better protection of the forestall ecosystems in the park with one purpose – to maintain the status of Galichica as a pearl of the Macedonian biological variety.

THE SOURCES ST. NAUM – OHRID
The sources of the Ohrid Lake “St. Naum” are composed of 30 underwater and 15 coast sources with total capacity of 7.5 m3 water per second. The sources are forming a 30 hectares long lake with maximal depth of 3.5 m. The temperature of the lake is from 10 to 12 C?. Separated from the Ohrid Lake, the sources despite their hydrographic values are also having particular fauna.

It is recommended to see the sources with a boat, because in that way the impression will be durable. The biggest part of the water of the sources derivates from the mountain massif Galichica, and it is also a part from the Prespa Lake.

Besides the distinguished and rich flora, represented through the endemic species like the silicate alga, the sources are also rich with fauna – from the microscopic organisms that live at the bottom, through the several types of fish, like the chub, the common nase, the gudgeon, the Peshtani trout, and also the grass snake and the water turtle. The air space is animated with the little egret and the little cormorant – rare specie in Europe.
